High rise buildings pierce the sky. People flood the sidewalks. Yellow taxis scream through the streets in a dialogue of honking. The subway rumbles beneath the ground. Billboards and signs plead for attention. The atmosphere can be harried, tense, overwhelming.

New York City was an adventure. It gave me a taste of a different lifestyle.
Beauty lies in the diversity of culture and style, while excitement
sparks on every street corner. There is never a dull moment—hardly the chance to stop and rest.
“I find myself rushing about even when I’m not in a hurry.”
“You have to put on a tough skin in this city.”
“Everyone is trying to rise to the top."
“Tell yourself everyday that you are fabulous. Don’t let other people beat you down."
These statements made by New Yorkers caused me to question a life in NYC. Yes, the city is alive with people and opportunity, but does it allow a person to truly live? It is a very individual-focused city. Walking down the street is a maze—a journey from point A to point B. The focus is forward and concentrated on the destination. I found my own pace accelerate and my mind on edge, unable to absorb and appreciate the moment.
What a dichotomy this experience was in comparison to a summer on Martha’s Vineyard! I realize the two extremes and feel blessed for the opportunity to understand both lifestyles. I do yearn for adventure—for the ability to experience new things, as I increase my character in understanding and acceptance. Will I be back to New York City? Yes!, but for now, I go home.
A knot of uncertainty untangled its grasp, as I booked my flight back to Seattle. I look forward to the embrace of family and friends. Let the next journey unfold.
